What Is EMSELLA?
EMSELLA is an FDA-cleared device that strengthens the pelvic floor using High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic energy, or HIFEM.
It treats urinary incontinence in both women and men by addressing the muscle weakness behind the symptom, rather than managing it with pads or medication. Nothing is inserted, and you remain fully clothed.
How Does EMSELLA Work?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles supporting the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. When those muscles weaken, they lose the ability to control urine flow reliably.
Electromagnetic energy triggers supramaximal contractions in that muscle group, meaning contractions considerably more intense than you could produce voluntarily. One session delivers the equivalent of thousands of Kegel exercises, and because the field stimulates the entire muscle group at once, results do not depend on getting the technique right the way they do with Kegels.
What EMSELLA Treats
- Stress incontinence: Leaks triggered by pressure, including coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, or exercise.
- Urge incontinence: A sudden, difficult-to-control need to urinate, sometimes with leakage before reaching the bathroom.
- Mixed incontinence: Both patterns together, which is common in older adults and harder to manage day to day.
EMSELLA Benefits
- Strengthens the pelvic floor without surgery or medication
- Treatment performed fully clothed while seated
- FDA-cleared and clinically studied
- Non-invasive with no needles, no incisions, and no anesthesia
- No downtime, return to normal activity immediately
- 30-minute sessions with no preparation required
- Improves core stability alongside bladder control
- Delivered in a clinical medical setting with physician oversight
EMSELLA for Women
Pregnancy and childbirth stretch and sometimes damage the pelvic floor, and leaking that begins postpartum often never fully resolves on its own. Menopause adds to it, since declining estrogen reduces tissue strength and muscle tone throughout the pelvic region.
Beyond bladder control, many women report improvements in core stability and sexual function as pelvic floor strength returns. For women who have tried strengthening those muscles on their own without much change, EMSELLA works the same area without depending on technique.
EMSELLA for Men
Prostate surgery and radiation frequently leave men with stress incontinence, and the options afterward tend to be limited to pads, medication, or another procedure. EMSELLA requires none of those.
Age-related pelvic floor weakening affects men as well, contributing to urgency, dribbling, and nighttime bathroom trips that interrupt sleep.
EMSELLA can also support erectile function. Because the pelvic floor muscles play a role in erection quality as well as urinary control, men experiencing erectile dysfunction, including after prostate surgery or radiation, may see this as an added benefit alongside improved bladder control.
What to Expect with EMSELLA
Consultation
Your consultation starts with your symptoms, how long they have been going on, and what you have already tried. Any of our medical providers can conduct the EMSELLA consultation, and new patients meet with Dr. Uy or Dr. Vidwans to go over the procedure directly.
Your provider will also review medications, prior surgeries, and any conditions that could be contributing, since bladder symptoms are not always about the pelvic floor alone.
Treatment
You sit fully clothed on the EMSELLA chair for approximately 30 minutes. During the session, you will feel your pelvic floor muscles contracting and releasing intensely, along with a tingling sensation. It is unusual rather than painful, and most patients read or use their phone throughout.
A typical protocol involves 6 sessions scheduled twice a week over three weeks, though your provider will recommend a schedule based on your symptoms and response.
After Your Session
EMSELLA Results
Many patients notice improvement after two or three sessions, with results continuing to develop for several weeks after the final treatment as the muscle strengthens.
Improvement typically means fewer leaks, better control, and less dependence on protective products. Some patients see symptoms resolve entirely, while others experience significant reduction. Results depend on the severity of your symptoms, the underlying cause, and your overall pelvic floor condition.
Results are not permanent. Pelvic floor muscles lose strength without use, the same way any muscle does, so many patients return for occasional maintenance sessions.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
- Experience leaks with coughing, sneezing, exercise, or lifting
- Deal with urgency that is difficult to control
- Have tried pelvic floor exercises without meaningful improvement
- Prefer a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical approach
- Have developed symptoms after childbirth or prostate surgery
- Are managing incontinence with pads and want a different option
A few things rule EMSELLA out, including cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, metal implants in the pelvic region, and pregnancy. Your physician will go through your full history before recommending treatment.

What our clients say
Every Provider has been patient and kind with my special needs brother, and worked with his family so he gets the best medical care. We have dealt with the front desk many, many times and they are ALWAYS very helpful, very kind and very patient with him and me. This a wonderful clinic!
– Leah B.
My doctor was DR. Uy and he is a great physician and was very empathetic and a good listener. I was very happy with him during my time in Virginia. They are polite on the phone and respond to voicemails for prescription refills very fast, usually the same day.
– Michael B.
Dr. Vidwans is our favorite doctor! He caught my husband’s cancer at a yearly checkup and sent him immediately for treatment. He’s extremely kind and he listens carefully when you’re describing a problem. He’s really an amazing young doctor. We love this practice!
Love Dr. Vidwans! He is a kind and knowledgeable doctor that wants to help people and provides lifestyle options rather than shoving pills down your throat. We moved to Maryland and still kept him because there’s no better PCP for us.
– Alejandro M.
Dr. Vidwans is the best doctor I’ve ever seen. Very caring and compassionate. Always takes time to listen to my questions and concerns. The entire staff is friendly and helpful.
– Laura H.
Excellent care and compassionate services. Wife almost died while we were traveling. Long hospital visit across the planet. After more surgeries and complications than I can count, the hospital discharged my wife with some minimal information. We flew home. Had a few pieces of paper to describe a week in the ICU and another week in trama surge. Doc Uy and his team have been very helpful in getting the follow-up care my spouse required. Sending love and good vibes your way!
– Bradley G.
